BioBorn to lead, Roy Mustang moved to Amestris from the east at an early age in order to immerse himself into the practical application of alchemy. Although a keenly developed student and apprentice, Roy knew that his true passion in alchemy would never suffice as simply a hobby. He joined the military at the earliest possible convenience and soon became a state alchemist just as quickly. Roy earned himself the title of the "Flame Alchemist", due to the specific and unique control he had learned with the use of chemical combustion from the secrets of his teacher's trusting daughter. Thus becoming a 'dog of the military' long before he ever understood what that would truly entail, Roy looked eagerly to his future.
The moment that the ongoing war in Ishbal began to elevate in it's atrocities, all of the state alchemists, including a young Major Mustang, were sent to the front line in order to forcibly eliminate all in their path. There is a great deal about the war in Ishbal that still haunts Roy to this day, although left mostly unsaid. Yet even years afterwards, the drive and the persistence that once steered him with ignorance was now pressing him towards an ultimate goal in preservation. No longer following orders needlessly, Roy was promoted to a Colonel where he purposefully grouped specific talents to stand faithfully at both sides in order for him to reach the top of the military. There, he would make sure that there would never again be an atrocity in the likes of which he had been forced to endure.
After meeting and practically raising the infamous Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse, Roy was able to grasp the final key that he'd been missing in uncovering one of the best-kept and frightening secrets of the military. Although hardly defenseless, the Flame Alchemist and his team fought to bring down the highest of all corrupting agents and avenge the terrors of Ishbal with the death of the monster Fuhrer. It was during this time when Mustang received one of the greatest of all blows to his sanity at the loss and murder of his best friend, Maes Hughes. Roy himself revealed their leader as a homunculus, a fake human, and although he took a great deal of collateral damage in the process, it successfully freed the country from barbarous control.
The true sacrifices ended with scars both physically and mentally as Roy lost two things he'd put a great deal of faith in; his left eye, and his prodigy subordinate, the Fullmetal Alchemist. Trapped for a good few years beneath the dark patch of 'could haves' or 'should have beens', the newly appointed Brigadier General lapsed into a state of denial that left him leery of his intentions. It was only with the help of the steady and determined sharpshooter at his right hand, Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye, that Mustang was able to revitalize both his spirit and his mission to pursue justice for those who could not.
